SQUATTING BOOK

Back in 1980 I spent a few weeks working as a book illustrator.  It was a voluntary project, collaborating with two friends from University days, Nick & Caroline who took on the roles of Editor & Designer.

One of the first things I tackled was re-drawing a series of cartoon jokes.  I can't remember what the source material was like, probably too variable in quality to use directly.  I took this as a challenge to adopt several different drawing styles so that the quality was consistent, but they weren't necessarily drawn by the same person.

Seems like we did decide to use one of the originals. Come to think of it, there may not have been previous drawings for all of these, some of them may have been thought up especially for the book.

I should mention that a llot of the work I did was used in title pages for different sections of the book.  The next one told a story of resistance using photographs of boarded-up houses as the frames of a strip cartoon.  This is all done by hand by the way, some photo-reduction etc but all the pages were pasted up manually.  I did the drawings on tracing paper, oversized.  We got them photo-reduced, then cut out the figures and stuck them over the house frontage pics.
